Training with William Joy
2 May 2026
I had the opportunity to attend a workshop with William Joy and Olivia Tang — two prominent pool freedivers from China holding world and continental record titles. The workshop took place during the same weekend as the MFPG Penang Competition, which made the whole experience physically and mentally exhausting, but absolutely worth it. Across two sessions — a theory sharing and a pool training session — I got a glimpse into how elite divers approach their training, from the drills they prioritize to the small details they pay attention to when preparing for performance. What stood out to me most was how meticulous and detail-oriented their process was. Coming from an Asian body type that is often at a disadvantage in pool freediving compared to taller Caucasian athletes, it was inspiring to see how much emphasis they placed on precision, efficiency, and refinement to remain highly competitive at the world level. Beyond the impressive distances and records, it reminded me that mastery in freediving is often built through consistency, structure, and the willingness to refine even the smallest parts of a dive.
